Where do most germs live in our homes?
Oh, almighty disinfection!
In terms of microbial population, the toilet seat is not the most dangerous place in the house. There are many other bacteria-populated places that come into daily contact with our body and that we don’t even think of. Careful cleaning in these places will help you to protect you and your family from diseases caused by these microscopic organisms.
1. Smartphones, TV remotes, computer keyboard and mouse, gaming wheels and joysticks
All these gadgets are usually in contact with our hands for a long time, but they are rarely getting disinfected.According to a UNICEF study, the quantity of germs sitting on such gadgets is 5 times bigger than on a toilet seat… Impressing, right? To clean them, use a dry brush to clean the dust first and then wipe with special wet wipes or a cloth, dampened in spirit/desinfector (take the batteries out beforehand).
2. Armrests for chairs and sofas
It is necessary to clean the cushioned furniture not only when a drink or food was spilled on the upholstery. After a while the furniture gets a lot of dust which is a perfect habitat for a huge number of pathogens, among which are dust mites. These parasites can trigger allergies, asthma, lower immune system. To clean germs from upholstery a steam cleaning is effective. Or if you don’t have a steam cleaner, a thorough and often vacuum cleaning will be a good prevention. Use a small brush for your vacuum cleaner and pay special attention to the gaps in between cushions.
3. Kitchen sink
Leftover food and the warm, humid environment in the kitchen sink is a haven for germs and fungus. Wipe down the sink after every dishwashing and clean it with a disinfectant solution at least once a week. Clean drains thoroughly, as it is a dirtiest place in the sink (the same as for shower and bathtub!). Change your dishwashing sponge at least once a week. After washing dry the kitchen surfaces (the microorganisms can survive in wet areas).
4. Cutting boards have a huge amount of germs on their surfaces. The reason is raw products like fish and meat. Make sure to have a separate (plastic or stone) board for raw fish and meat and the other for fresh fruits and vegetables. Try to disinfect cutting boards at least once a week and replace them every couple of months.
5. Refrigerator
Small crumbs, sauce stains, spilled soup stains, containers of unwashed vegetables - all this makes the refrigerator one of the most unsanitary places in the house. A regular wet cleaning with soapy water/vinegar will help to avoid dangerous bacteria. Special attention required to a rubber seal, where the most favorable conditions for bacteria are created. It is especially important to monitor the cleanliness of the refrigerator in the summer: due to high temperatures, the rate of reproduction of microbes increases.
6. Pet food bowls
Food can sit in pet bowls for hours. This creates a breeding ground for bacteria and negatively affects the health of pets and their owners. Moreover, plastic and ceramic bowls are considered more dangerous than glass and metal ones. Wash the bowl of your pet every day with soap and water!
7. Toothbrushes
According to scientists’ studies , more than 100 million bacteria live on a toothbrush. It absorbs all kinds of germs flying in the bathroom. For example, when flushing a toilet, a water-air aerosol saturated with bacteria goes into the air and sits on the objects around. The best way to minimize the risk of spreading bacteria is to close the lid before every flush and store your toothbrush away from the toilet.
8. Bathroom curtain
Below, it is usually covered with yellowish or even orange stains - these are accumulations of bacteria. Try to change or wash the curtain as often as possible.
9. Sleeping mattress
can contain a huge amount of bacteria as well as dust mites. Darkness, warm temperature, dead skin shells and dust- is a great environment for germs. Scientists recommend to change the mattress every 7-8 years. During such a period, it manages to accumulate an average of 4.5 kg of skin horny scales. This provokes allergic reactions - nasal congestion, tears, sneezing, exacerbation of asthma. That's why it's so important to regularly vacuum your mattress and dust your pillows.
10. Door handles and switches
Due to frequent and unavoidable use, doorknobs become one of the dirtiest places in the house. The same applies to light switches and furniture handles. Make it a rule to disinfect them at least once a week. Antibacterial wipes or an alcohol solution are good for this purpose.
