So different… Sponges !
It is not correct to say, that the sponge is just a thing you put a soap on and you can use any sponge anywhere.
Oh no! A sponge is a tool!
And there are many different sponges for many different purposes.
Let’s see some of them here.
Heavy duty sponge
Heavy duty steel scrub sponge with its hard pad of green/black color can actually be used ONLY for cleaning steel- steel sink, pots etc. They are safe on non-coated cookware, concrete, oven racks, tools.
DO NOT use them for the glass ceramic stove, faucets, pans, utensils, glasses, windows or any other surfaces – it will scratch them!
Soft sponge
This one is known as a NON-SCRATCHING cleaning sponge and is safe for cleaning all the surfaces, bathroom, kitchen, doors, glass, dishes, countertops etc. They are usually made of foam rubber, or cellulose. And as a rule their harder non-scratching pads are white. (however sometimes there are blue version =))
* You will recognize such sponges by the inscription on the package: “soft sponge” or “non-scratching sponge”
Glass-ceramic stove sponge + kitchen sink
If you are looking for an effective, but non scratching sponge for your ceramic/electric/induction stove and metal sink, then this one is the right one. They are a bit harder than the soft ones, but are safe to use on a stove and sink inside.
However be careful to use them on any other surface - for example on faucets, some of these sponges are good for the stove and metal sink only, but may scratch all other surfaces!
Melamine sponge
A truly magic sponge, that helps in many different purposes, without even using any cleaning detergent!
It works like an eraser- just cut a small peace of the sponge, make it a bit wet with slightly warm water (not hot!) and use it for cleaning stubborn oil and dirt stains on kitchen cabinets, black lines, marker pen, crayon marks on walls (white walls only! be careful when using it on painted surfaces, since it can take some paint off and leave traces!), cleaning doors, scotch tape from glass and surfaces, it is used even for cleaning in between the tiles in the bathroom and for cleaning shoes.
However the composition of melamine sponge is toxic and should NEVER get in touch with food, never use it for cleaning the dishes. Always wear gloves when using it. And keep it far from reach of children and pets .
Sponges for kitchen sink (with hard stains), oven and oven trays
When you feel that that a regular dish cleaning sponge is not strong enough to clean your oven, oven trays, grill or metal kitchen sink, then these sponges will do a good job for you.
Eco-Friendly kitchen sponges
Such cleaning sponges are made of 100% plant based materials for a variety of cleaning tasks. They are non-allergic.
