Dishwasher care
It seems that having a dishwasher at home, loading and emptying it every day is an absolutely normal and simple task, we don’t even think about it and sometimes don’t even know how to take care of our kitchen helper. Here are a few tips how to maintain your dishwasher so that it serves you better and longer.
1. Scrape and rinse the dishes before putting them into dishwasher.
Food leftovers on your plates can cause your dishwasher to become clogged, making cleaning less effective. Moreover, they can get stuck to dishes once the cycle is over, leaving you with the job of having to handwash them. If you could not fill your dishwasher with dirty dishes right after dinner and the dirty plates became dry, soak them in hotwater.
2. Fill the dishwasher correctly!
- Cups, glasses, small dishes should be placed on the top shelfupside down and big plates, pans and pots on the bottom shelf. The larger the plate, the closer it should be placed to the edge of the machine.
- Fix the objects safely! Do not put fragile dishes too close to the heavy ones and leave the space between the dishes and cups- during vibration of the machine they can hit or scratch each other.
- Kitchen utensils should be placed in a special compartment- knifes with a handle up, forks and spoons with a handle down.
Do not overload the dishwasher! Check if the spinning spray moves easily.
3. Pay attention to the label and material of your dishes and utensils! Unfortunately not all the dishes and utensils can be washed in the dishwasher.
- Wooden pieces like handles of the knives, wooden cutting boards, and spoons swell when exposed to moisture and temperature.
- Plastic can melt at high temperatures.- it is better to put plastic containers on the top shelf and choose a medium temperature.
- Aluminum, silver, copper, or pewter cookware oxidizes and darkens with moisture and temperature.
- Cookware with non-stick Teflon coating risk losing their properties after being treated with specialized detergents.
- It is recommended to wash knives, graters, vegetable cutters only on a delicate mode since the blades risk dull from hot water.
- Objects contaminated with wax, paint, ash, etc. can clog the machine.
- Items decorated with painting. (not to wash it off)
To avoid unpleasant situations, you should always look at the labeling of the dishes.
4. How to empty the dishwasher.
Even this easy process has a few important moments.
- Do not empty the dishwasher right after it has finished- the dishes are very hot and there is a risk of getting burned. Also some of the dishes and glasses are sensitive to temperature changes and may crack when putting them hot on cool surface. It is better to open a bit the door of dishwasher and wait for about 15 min until it chills down.
- Empty first the bottom shelf and then the top one, otherwise the water drops from the top shelf will make the dishes on the bottom shelf wet again if you empty the top one first.
- Do not close the dishwasher right after emptying- let it dry for a while to prevent from excessivehumidity.
5. Cleaning agents.
For 1 cycle in the dishwasher, 3 types of household chemicals are used: detergent, rinse aid and salt. Each of them has a separate compartment.
- You can only use specialized dishwashing tabs. Hand dishwashing gels make too much foam and can damage your machine. The most popular are labels Finish, Somat, Sun. There are also ecological dishwasher tabs like Ecover, Held, Sonett
- The rinse aid protects the dishes from corrosion, lime formation, and also adds shine. During the drying phase, it prevents smudges and stains on the dishes.
- Salt softens the water and prevents limescale in the machine and smudges on dishes. This is especially efficient for hard water. Some dishwashers have a salt indicator that lets you know if there is not enough salt.
6. Dishwasher care.
Here are few more tips how to make your dishwasher serve you longer.
- Front door. Only open it to load or unload the dishwasher. Do not do this while the device is running.
- Wipe the door seals with a damp cloth and a little dishwashing soap.
- Clean the filters and dishwasher spray from time to time. You can screw out the filter manually, empty it if the dirt has accumulated in it and clean it with a brush and a dish soap.
- If you do not use the machine for a long time, sometimes open the door and ventilate it so that fungus does not appear inside.
- If programs with short durations are used regularly, grease and limescale may form on the inside of the appliance. To avoid this, it is recommended to run the program with a longer duration at least 2 times a month.
- A degreaser will help get rid of the grease marks if they have appeared.
Take care of your dishwasher and it will serve you with gratitude!
